Hello! It's a new solar car season! We're starting up again, meeting on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5.

We elected a temporary Captain Peter. We will possibly re-elect once more new members join. The team is going to be recruiting many new members this year, hopefully. We also intend to build a new car, so that we will have a car for the Track races and a car for the Road races.

Updates and Results

What a wonderful week we’ve had! We’d like to thankall our sponsors and everyone involved in the Solar Car Challenge for makingthe race a possibility for us.

Our final lap-count was 15, but we really made 19.Unfortunately, we got 4 penalty laps, but that’s alright. Our goal for thisyear was to get on the track and race. That’s exactly what we did. We made 22.5miles with Heliocentric, after a great deal of work.

Although we ran into a lot of problems with ourmotor, steering, brakes, and a few problems with our MPPT (maximum power pointtracker) and our solar array, we were able to get out and make a few laps thoselast few days with a lot of help from our friends on other teams. One team, theHuston Racers team, was awarded a trophy for making the most laps the daybefore. They decided to dedicate their trophy to us because they thought we’ddone such a good job and had come such a long way on our car. We’re verygrateful to them because they acknowledged how hard we all worked on that weekto make our car run.

There should be some pictures coming to the website, too, from the race. Once again, we’re super thankful to all our sponsors andall people who gave us help and support through the difficulties we cameacross.

A Note from the Electrical Team

By: Anthony Keba, Head of Electronics (fictional doppleganger of Black Panther)

Today is the final day of racing and things could not be more stressful. I've decided to try describing the whole feel of the race, it's a lot like what an Aircraft Carrier's deck is like, with things moving at high speed perfectly organized to the second. On top of that today is the most stressful day because teams want to get in as many laps as possible last minute!

Our team's morning began without much need to rush and was mostly a relaxation period. The only electrical problem I was faced with was that the secondary low voltage alarm was broken, so I replaced it with a meter to display voltage to the driver. After that quick fix we were back on the track racing again. We raced 11 laps (with 1 penalty, making 10 total so far today) and then the chain popped off... again. Now a combination of mechanical and electrical members are racing to find a solution, it is currently 9:30AM and racing ends at 2:00PM.

Very recent conversations are discussing whether or not we should continue racing, from what I can understand we have achieved our goal of making 1lap and are now faced with problems that cannot be fixed properly before the end of the race. On a side note the leader of the race is nearing 400 laps so there is very little hope of placing anything.

I'm very surprised still as to the willingness of other racers to help our team! Before we raced I had about three teams come to me asking if their team could help us in any way. On top of that this morning the Huston Solar team gave us one of their trophies for "coming so far"! Their other trophy went to another team in a similar situation (the trophy was given to Huston for completing the most laps the day before).

PS: today is the first day we actually arrived on time for racing (9AM)!

Good Racing

We are so proud! We've been having the greatest time out here in Texas. We've run into a lot of problems, but we've worked them out and our car is racing down the speedway. We've gotten quite a few laps, and it's only 10 in the morning! We're super excited to be here, and want to thank all our sponsors!

Just this session, we've done 8 laps already! Our car is working well, and our MPPT seems to be letting the solar array charge the batteries! We're having a lot of fun out here and are really happy to finally be running laps.

once again, thanks to all our sponsors and donors! And if there's any high schooler you know who's interested, tell them they can email Alyssa at [email protected] to find out more information.

On the Road

Hello, it's Alyssa again, writing to you at 1:24 in the morning in Wichita, Kansas! Wow, it's been a long few days. Between driving hours in a car from Bend, Oregon all the way to Kansas, and at night working more on our car, we're having a great time!

We're all having fun and really excited. The car's back wheel and suspension seems like it will finally work the way we want it to, and the bus bars for the batteries have been re-soldered to keep them from arching and hurting them.

We have a couple ideas of how to make the car top rise up and down in order to be able to get in and out in under fifteen seconds for scrutineering.

Next stop, Texas!!

Save Your Styrofoam!

~ By Erienne McCray

Save up your Styrofoam! Part of the process of "getting to Texas" is packing the car into the trailer... and then wandering down over windy, bumpy roads. Last time we raced, we nearly shook our car apart.

But this year, we have a plan! Instead of just resting the car in the trailer, we're going to take a leaf out of toymakers' books and pack our car in Styrofoam. But this means we're going to need a LOT of Styrofoam!

If you have packing peanuts, packing foam, bubble wrap, or any other packaging material, please save it up for us! Contact Tom Stueve or Erienne McCray if you have Styrofoam you would like to donate!

Thank you for your support!

Important Budget Updates

The Team is now in need of around $18,800 in order to be ready to go and to travel to Texas. Any donations, big or small, are GREATLY appreciated, as we only have till July to get all these funds!

A huge thanks to all our sponsors and donors, as you've helped lift the burden a bit.

Again, if you have any fundraiser or sponsorship oportunities you think might help the Team, please contact us.
